Wellness exams can be highly beneficial to your pets and are recommended by vets the same way wellness exams are recommended for humans by doctors and dentists. A wellness exam can reveal a potential problem in its early stages while it is still easy to treat.
A major benefit of wellness exams is that they give you a chance to check in with your vet. Together you can review your pets lifestyle, exercise routines, eating and sleeping habits, and any recent changes in behavior. Your vet keeps records on your pets weight, health, and any issues the two of you discuss. Changes from year to year can be easily noticed and discussed. An annual exam gives you both a chance to make vaccination decisions (especially important if you plan on boarding your pet during your next vacation) and to discuss parasite control products. If you have any questions about recent changes in your pet’s behavior an annual exam is the perfect time to ask.
Remember pets don’t usually tell us when they feel sick. Their instincts are to hide their pain and discomfort so as not to appear week to other animals. A wellness exam may reveal hidden conditions like an ear infection or internal parasites, so make sure you’re taking your furry friend to their wellness exam at least once a year.
